Communicating with Your Baby : Baby Cues

Updated: Dec 2, 2025

From the very first days, babies communicate long before they can speak. Their tiny gestures, facial expressions & sounds are their way of telling you what they need, how they feel & what they enjoy. Learning to read these cues, builds a strong bond & supports healthy development.

Common Baby Cues include:

  • Crying - often signals hunger, discomfort or tiredness.

  • Eye contact & smiles: signs of engagement & connection.

  • Movements & gestures: Reaching, waving arms or turning away can show curiosity or overstimulation.

  • Sounds & Coos: Early attempts at communication & expressing emotion.

    Why It Matters:

Responding sensitively to your babies cues, strengthens trust, nurtures emotional wellbeing & supports brain development.

Every moment of attuned interactions helps your baby feel seen, safe & understood.

Remember, every baby is unique - learning their individual signals takes patience, observation & love.
