Emotional Refuelling: During Pregnancy & After Birth

Updated: Dec 2

Pregnancy & the early weeks after birth are deeply transformative - both emotionally & physically. Whilst we often focus on appointments, scans & preparing for the baby, it's just as important to care for yourself.

Emotional refuelling means topping up your inner reserves so you can feel supported, calmer & more connected - both to yourself & your growing baby. Its not indulgent. Its essential!!

Why Emotional Refuelling Matters:

  • Your wellbeing supports your baby's wellbeing: a calm nurtured nervous system helps your baby feel safe & connected.

  • Pregnancy & new parenthood can be overwhelming. Hormonal shifts, sleep changes & big life adjustments can drain your reserves quickly.

  • You deserve to feel held too: caring for your emotional health helps you to show up with more confidence & compassion.

Simple ways to emotionally refuel:

  1. Slow, conscious breathing: Just a few minutes of slow breathing helps to regulate your nervous system & brings you back into the present moment.

  2. Connection with others: Talking to someone you trust - a partner, family member or a friend - reduces emotional load & boosts oxytocin.

  3. Gentle Movement: stretching, walking, pregnancy yoga or simply changing your body position can shift your emotional energy.

  4. Quiet moments of pause: a warm bath, cup of tea in silence, listening to music - small pockets of rest build emotional resilience.

  5. Nourishing thoughts: Speak to yourself kindly. Acknowledge the huge transition you're navigating. Remind yourself you are doing enough.

  6. Asking for support: Real strength lies in allowing others to help, whether it's with meals, chores or simply holding space for you.

After Birth: Refuelling Matters Even More

The postnatal period can be joyful & demanding.

Emotional refuelling helps you:

  1. Stay grounded during sleep deprivation

  2. Process your birth experience

  3. Connect with your baby in a calmer more attuned way

  4. Support your recovery & overall wellbeing

Remember: a Nurtured Parent Nurtures a Nurtured Baby!
